I always enjoy SXSW -- the energy, the people, the talent.  Here is a recording I did of opening remarks by Tony Hsieh, CEO of Zappos!  Zappos has unbelievable customer service, and Tony shared information about the company's culture and values and how those items relate to their business model.

Austin VizThink Community Meet Up

Great discussion last night by Dillon McKinsey Robinson about dream charting.  I volunteered to have a dream analyzed - cheez, it was in front of everyone!!!  Decided to be vulnerable and transparent.  There were a few tense moments for me but I survived.  And Dillon's intrepretation was spot on.

I was particularly interested in hearing Dillon's thoughts about archetypes and imagery in dreams.  Sometimes, a cigar is just a cigar.

Gen V

Generation V
The online behavior and attitudes of people from all walks of life are blending together, cutting across all of the traditional demographics and giving rise to a new group called "Generation Virtual," according to Gartner, and information technology research and advisory group.

Unlike previous generations, Generation V is not defined by age, gender, social glass, or geography. Instead it is based on an increasing preference for the use of digital media channels to discover information, build knowledge, and share insights.

I am all over Generation V. Sometimes I am a contributor, adding to a conversation started by some else. Sometimes I am a creator, providing original content such as my newsletter or this blog. Frequently I am an opportunist in that I'll further a conversation while walking through watching from the sidelines.

Here are maps I created for a World Cafe event for UNT in April. The subject of the World Cafe was Diversity and Inclusion. Three speakers asked thought provoking questions which were then discussed by participants.

Communities in Schools

CIS is an amazing organization. They bring services to at-risk youths to help them successfully graduate and give back to the community. Juli Fellows, a terrific organizational development practitioner, led Central Texas CIS in a strategic planning session, and asked me to capture the outcomes. Here is the image I created.

Jane McGonigal, gamer and futurist, gave a great presentation at SXSW on Tuesday.

Frank Warren

Frank Warren of PostSecrets fame was amazing to record. This was probably the high point of the conference for me. If you are not familiar with Post Secrets, check out his blog -- the 3rd most watched blog in the world.

Zuckerberg At SXSW

Mark Zuckerberg fended off a hostile interviewer today during his keynote. The audience loved him -- so did I.

I will be at the SXSW Interactive Festival for the next few days. My friend, Sunni Brown and I are official SXSW graphic recorders! We will be doing all of the keynotes which will be posted daily to the SXSW website. Come back here to see some of my renderings.

"But I Can't Draw"

"I can't draw."

That's what I hear a lot when I talk to people about graphic language. Phoey! Everyone can draw. We've just learned to be uber critics. To prove my point, here is a drawing by my grandchildren, Caty, age 4, and Jack, age 2 (with a few of my contributions).

The composition has life, energy, context. The images are intelligible if not perfect. There is something in this map that speaks to everyone!

This is a map I created based on a blog posting by Tony Karrer on the state of learning in today's environment. Tony was working on a presentation for DevLearn and ASTD and wondered if elearning, elearning 1.3, and learning 2.0 co-exist.

While I am not crazy about the moniker 1.3, I suppose there is a stage between elearning and what others are calling elearning 2.0, but I prefer to refer to as learning 2.0 -- actually it is just learning! Tony asked for a bone -- here is mine.

Notice the relative sizes of the training department and learners in each "land."

This is a recording I did today at the Austin Human Resource Management Association workshop presented by Catherine Crago. The topic was about what one needs to consider when communicating about diversity initiatives.

Austin's Non-Profits Celebrate 2nd Katrina Anniversary

I was privileged today to hear leaders in the non-profit community, Austin City Manager, Toby Futrell, and mayor, Will Wynn, reminisce about how Central Texans opened their hearts and pocketbooks to hurricane refugees in the late summer of 2005. Over 160 agencies participated and many of the case workers and representatives of those agencies were present today to be recognized for the work that continues even now. Thank you Amy BeVille Elder for the invitation to be a part of this event. The recording above captures some of the highlights of today's celebration.

Later, I redrew the map to "clean it up" a bit so that souvenir copies could be made for many of the non-profit organizations who participated. Here is the cleaned up version:
